How to Start a Fitness Routine

Happy 2022 Everyone!

It’s that time of year when we tend to reflect and set goals for the coming year. Whether you feel the need to set some goals or not, I want to remind all of us to go easy on ourselves! This pandemic has been tough and it’s okay if you are in a space of wanting to just take it day by day. However, if you’ve been interested in creating healthier habits this year, here are my tips to get started with a fitness routine!

Start with the # of days you’re currently working out and add 1-2 days. For example, if your current number of days working out per week is zero, add 1-2 and that can be a great place to start! Remember, if you are working out 5-6 days a week, rest is important too!

  1. Whatever the number you decide on that can realistically work, aim for half of the workout to be cardio and half of it to be strength training. For example, if your goal is to workout twice a week, make one of those cardio (walking, running, swimming, biking, etc.) and the other strength training (I recommend total body exercises that I find on Youtube - I love MadFit & Tone It Up). If your goal is to workout once a week, make ½ the workout cardio and ½ of it strength.

  2. Keep in mind - ANY movement and time you give your workout counts. This means trying a new class, going out for a quick walk, doing a video you get from Youtube - all counts as exercise. You don’t need to workout for a full hour, any time you can give your body and mind is worthwhile - seriously, even 10-15 minutes counts!

  3. Lastly, if you need help getting started please reach out! I often work with clients to get them on a routine they can do on their own. I’d love to help you!
